چکیده

Electrical stimulation of the temporal lobe was performed in chronic schizophrenic patients to treat the auditory hallucinations. During electrical stimulation, there appeared different kinds of hallucinations. The characteristics of the hallucinations produced by the temporal lobe stimulation greatly differ from those of the schizophrenic hallucinations. Visual and auditory hallucinations by the temporal lobe stimulation might depend on different pathopysiological mechanisms. The kinesthetic and vestibular hallucina tions could be considered as a basis of the pathophysiological mechanism of the auditor] hallucinations. The temporal lobe stimulation for the auditory hallucina tions in schizophrenic patients showed some therapeutic effectiveness.

Background & Aims: Schizophrenia is characterized by a broad range of unusual behaviors that cause profound disruption in the lives of the patients suffering from the condition. individuals with schizophrenia show dysfunction within brain lobes. The aim of this research was to compare brain posterior areas' wave activities in the schizophrenic patient with a healthy group.   Materials & Metho...

A controlled study of temporal lobe structure volumes and P300 responses in schizophrenic patients with persistent auditory hallucinations.

Recent studies of cerebral pathology in patients with schizophrenia have focused on symptomatological and electrophysiological correlates of reduced temporal lobe structure volumes. Volume deficits of the left superior temporal gyrus have been correlated with auditory hallucinations as well as to left-sided P300 amplitude reduction. However, caution is needed to interpret correlational data as ...

Effect of low-frequency rTMS on electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) and regional brain metabolism (PET) in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND Auditory hallucinations are characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia with high clinical importance. It was repeatedly reported that low frequency (<or=1 Hz) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) diminishes treatment-resistant auditory hallucinations. A neuroimaging study elucidating the effect of rTMS in auditory hallucinations has yet to be published. OBJECTIVE To ev...

Electrical cortical stimulation of the human prefrontal cortex evokes complex visual hallucinations.

Complex visual hallucinations are a well-known feature of electrical stimulation or epileptic discharge in the temporal lobe. It has been proposed that these visual hallucinations result from an electrical interference with the ventral visual processing stream in the lateral temporal lobe and the memory system in medial temporal structures, which explains their frequent visual and mnestic featu...

Auditory hallucinations and the temporal cortical response to speech in schizophrenia: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

OBJECTIVE The authors explored whether abnormal functional lateralization of temporal cortical language areas in schizophrenia was associated with a predisposition to auditory hallucinations and whether the auditory hallucinatory state would reduce the temporal cortical response to external speech. METHOD Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure the blood-oxygenation-level-de...
